Public art preservation is an important part of Twentynine Palms’ PAAC program

The art scene is booming in Twentynine Palms, as new artists are coming to the city, and the city’s Public Arts Advisory Committee is providing support to new and existing art.

On a recent episode of the Z107.7 Up Close Show, host Gary Daigneault spoke to Twentynine Palms Mayor and council member Steve Bilderain about the city’s relationship with art. When asked about the PAAC’s major achievements, Mayor Bilderain immediately brought up preservation.

“The preserve it. That’s the big thing. The help us to preserve it and maintain it, and let us know appropriate budgets for that kind of work. Because a lot of the public art work we have is sitting outside, getting beat down by the sun. Our big ’29!’ sign on the hill? That needs to be redone, and they brought the matter to our attention. Besides preserving what we’ve got, they’re bringing new art in. That’s a big plus, because we’ve got new artists coming into our area.”

Daigneault asked Mayor Bilderain for a reason why artists are moving to the hi-desert, and Twentynine Palms in particular.

Mayor Bilderain said, “Just using your phone and taking a picture of the sunset out here makes you an artist. I’m not an artist or artistic kind of person, but you sit out here and relax, I’m sure you can draw or visualize a lot of good things without the noises of freeways or traffic, the other hustle and bustle of the city. Come out here and get tranquil. See the stars in the night sky.”

You can listen to the full conversation with Mayor Bilderain and James by listening to the Z1077 Up Close Show as a podcast.
