PROTECT YOUR HOUSE FROM WILDFIRE

Reporter Mike Lipsitz has some tips on how to protect your home from wildfire…

As the threat of wildfire continues, The Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH)® suggests some critical actions to take before, during, and after wildfires. Be prepared with a disaster safety kit in case evacuation is ordered. Have a fire disaster plan. Review your insurance policy with an eye toward what additional coverage you may need. Check your property for fuels that could lead flames to your home. Clean gutters, eaves, and roof. Install a spark arrestor if you have a chimney. Identify an emergency water supply within 1,000 feet of your home. If you must evacuate, only return when local officials permit—the area may still be under a threat. Contact your insurance company if you find any damage, and take pictures. For links and more information on wildfires and your home, go to http://flash.org/peril_inside.php?id=191
