Wildfire season is becoming a year-round threat in California. Morongo Basin residents know that wildfires are not just a threat in mountain areas, but can threaten the desert too. Hilary Sloane says firefighters offer the following tips to make your home and property more resistant to wildfire…
Around your home, try use nonflammable mulch, like stones, rocks or sand, forming a five-foot border around the dwelling. On the same note, rake and remove brush and dry leaves from your home’s foundation often. While 3-5 feet is recommended, the farther away, the better. Be sure to dispose of collected debris in appropriate trash receptacles. In general, sweep leaves and other flammable plant growth away from your home, porch, or patio. And don’t forget sheds and play structures, as they should be kept away from flammable debris as well. Finally, if any trees or branches touch your home, or are getting close, now is a good time to trim them.
