With a spate of credit card crimes occurring here in our Morongo basin, the Sheriff’s Department is offering some tips on how to protect yourself and your family. Managing editor Tami Roleff joins us…
Several residents of the Morongo Basin have had their credit or debit card information stolen recently. Sergeant Randy Warfield of the Sheriff’s Department offers the following tips to help protect your credit and debit card information: keep absolute physical control of your card at all times. Don’t leave it out in view of others, don’t lend it out, not even to family members, and destroy, or keep under lock and key, any bank statements about your card. Sergeant Warfield warns against using the cards at gas pumps, as thieves are increasingly putting “skimmers” on pumps to steal your card information. When dining out, don’t give your card to the waiter; walk it to the register and watch as your card is scanned and wait for it to be handed back to you. Warfield also warns against using credit and debit cards for online shopping. Finally, he urges people to cancel their card at the first sign of anything suspicious on their account.
