PROPOSED SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY CHARTER PART 5: SUPERVISORS DUTIES

Updated 8-10
In our recent coverage of the proposed new County Charter, Z107.7 News mistakenly reported the proposed new charter would appear on the November 3 Election Ballot under the title, “The San Bernardino County Supervisor Compensation Reduction and Term Limits Initiative.” That title is associated with another ballot initiative and unrelated to the proposed new County Charter. The county’s revised charter will be on the November 3 ballot as “Revised Charter: County of San Bernardino.” Z107.7 News regrets the error.

This November, voters in our county will decide if a proposed new county charter will guide county government operations in the coming years or if the existing charter is better left as is. The option will appear under a ballot measure entitled, “Revised Charter: County of San Bernardino.” Developed by the County Board of Supervisors, the proposed new charter aims to replace the current, century-old charter with one that reflects modern business practices, prioritizes transparency, and increases public involvement. Today we continue our look at the proposed new charter with a look at its description of the duties of those serving on the board of supervisors. Here’s reporter Mike Lipsitz…

The provision in the proposed charter that covers all that is required of a county supervisor is quite detailed and may best be summarized by the saying, “With great power, comes great responsibility.” Among other requirements, the proposed charter stipulates that supervisors must appropriately represent county residents at public meetings; that they must respond to natural disasters and other emergencies; that they are obliged to meet with constituents as needed; and ensure the county is well represented with respect to other government agencies. Each supervisor is also expected to serve on numerous other governing boards within their district and across the state.

Join us for our next report when we will look at what the proposed charter would require as far as redistricting. The public can review specifics of the proposed charter and leave comments at newcharter.sbcounty.gov/.
