Credit card “skimmer” found at Twentynine Palms business

A credit card skimmer was found at the checkout at the Dollar General in Twentynine Palms, according to the San Bernardino Sheriff’s department. A credit card skimmer is made to look like part of the machine its attached to, and it scans your credit card as you slide it through what you think is just the store’s payment processor. Then the skimmer is later collected and the credit card numbers are then used or sold.

According to the police report – Dollar General is looking through camera footage to see if they can spot who installed the skimming device. If you ever use your card with a device and something feels off – maybe the device feels more clunky or has extra parts on it that don’t look familiar – notify management of the establishment and if the device has been modified by anyone other than the store, contact law enforcement.

You may think that the contactless “tap to pay” cards are even less secure, with minimal contact needed to process a transaction. In reality – the “tap to pay” method is encrypted, meaning that the information passed is meaningless without the proper code to decode it. Credit card skimmers rely on the old “swipe” method where a credit card number is stored in plain numbers on a thin magnetic strip – just waiting for the right device to read it.

Review: Final weekend of “Man of La Mancha” bursts through the darkness!

I had the pleasure of attending the gala opening night of Theatre 29’s production of “Man of La Mancha.” Gary Daigneault, the director of the program and owner of this radio station, asked that I submit my review of the show, which is as follows.

Having no familiarity with the 20th century musical by Dale Wasserman, Mitch Leigh, and Joe Darion, nor the 17th century Cervantes novel that serves as source material, I can say that I was surprisingly delighted by the Theatre 29’s production of the show.

Prisoners during the Spanish Inquisition re-enact the tale of Don Quixote, a delusional and confused knight who seeks to right the wrongs of the world.

It’s not quite as bleak as it sounds, though the production touches on heavy and violent themes. The single set: the interior of a dark, inescapable subterranean prison is brilliantly realized by designer Andrea Keller, and looms over the happenings throughout, giving weight to the action, comedy, and flights of fancy offered up by the game cast.

Of course, the show isn’t all doom and religious persecution. The knight Don Quixote, played with a combination of dazed gusto and sophistication by Joe Chaplain, inspires those around him, including a young Sancho Panza, delivered with a wide-eyed and infectious enthusiasm by Adam Shows

The heart of the show is Aldonza, AKA Dulcinea, played by Analisa Pilecki, who wields her larger-than-life voice to deliver on the deeply tragic moments and the high emotional stakes of the show.

The ensemble cast, each tasked with a number of roles, has a great deal of fun transforming between them. Daigneault’s direction keeps the production moving through several layers of reality with clarity and charm, keeping the focus on the musical’s emotional core.

Though I had know idea what to expect from Theatre 29’s “Man of La Mancha,” I was truly moved and definitely dazzled by what the cast and crew delivered.

“Man of La Mancha” continues its run at Theatre 29 on weekends through March 17.

Tickets for “Man of La Mancha” are available now at www.theatre29.org or by calling the Theatre 29 Box Office at 760-361-4151.

Early reservations are encouraged as demand is expected to be high.

Film about veterans and art therapy premiering next month

On last Friday’s (March 8) Up Close Show, host Gary Daigneault sat down to discuss the Hi Desert art scene with local artist Anna Stump. Here is reporter Adeline J. Wells with information about a new movie project premiering next month.

Some may know Anna Stump as Chair of the Twentynine Palms’ Public Arts Advisory Committee (PAAC), or as creator of the city’s eccentric Mojaveland miniature golf course. The local artist is also now working on a film about veterans and the scars that they carry. Stump serves as producer for the project, collaborating with partner Ted Meyer and musician Pat Kearns.

“We’ve got four subjects right now, and they are all veterans who have scars – physical scars, either from accidents, wounds, or illness that were related to their military service. We have three Marines and One Navy Seal.”

The film highlights the effect that art can have on scars not visible to the eye.

“It’s about art therapy, it’s about healing, and making these scars visible. Veterans suffer just like everybody else, but probably at a higher level from depression because of possibly their service. It should be very uplifting.”

The film will premiere on April 10 during a free event at Copper Mountain College.

You can listen to Gary’s full conversation with Anna Stump by downloading the Up Close Show as a podcast.

“Slow speed pursuit” of suspected stolen motorcycle causes Hwy. 247 delays on Monday (3/11)

What witnesses described as a “slow speed pursuit” south along Old Woman Springs Road on Monday night (March 11) ended in the arrest of a parolee for suspicion of stealing a motorcycle.

The Victorville Sheriff’s Department reports that the pursuit began in Victorville before snaking its way southbound through Lucerne, Johnson Valley, and Landers, and ended in Yucca Valley.

Deputies say they attempted to conduct a traffic stop on what they believed to be a stolen motorcycle in Victorville, but the driver led deputies on an approximate 63-mile pursuit ending in Yucca Valley.

The driver of the motorcycle was identified as Cory Brown, a 38 year-old transient from Victorville. The motorcycle, a 2023 Harley Davidson, was reported stolen out of Las Vegas.

Deputies from Apple Valley, Victor Valley, Morongo Basin, and Sheriff’s Aviation assisted during the pursuit. The motorcycle came to a stop at the intersection of Old Woman Springs Road and Buena Vista Dr, and Brown was taken into custody.

Joshua Adam Kaiser found guilty of attempted murder and arson

Edit 4:45PM on 3/14/24: A previous version of the story claimed that the suspect was guilty of “premeditated murder,” when it should have read “attempted murder.” We regret the error.

On Wednesday afternoon a jury found Joshua Adam Kaiser, 33, of Johnson Valley, guilty of two counts of attempted murder; two counts of arson causing great bodily injury, and one count of injuring a spouse/girlfriend.  Allegations of personal infliction of great bodily injury and weapon use were also found true.

On June 19 of last year County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the Hi Desert Medical Center regarding two burn victims, identified as a 30 year-old male and 29 year-old female, both residents of Yucca Valley. The male victim suffered life threatening injuries and was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for more advanced treatment. Both victims have since been released from the hospital and continue to recover.

Joshua Adam Kaiser was arrested in connection with trying to kill his former girlfriend and another man by burning them with a gasoline-fueled fire.

Kaiser faces multiple potential life sentences when he is sentenced.  The next court date is March  29 – The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Jason Gueltzow and tried before Judge Rasheed Alexander.
