The Joshua Basin Water District and Joshua Tree National Park spring Native Plant Sale is Sunday, March 24 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the water district office next to the demonstration garden on Chollita Road in Joshua Tree.

All proceeds benefit the native plant education program.  Cash or local checks only, please.  The native plant sale features true natives including Desert Willow and Milkweed, Bladderpod, Paperbag and Creosote bushes, Mojave Yucca, and many others.

Seedlings cost $9 each, or three for $25. There will also be a free seed and plant swap booth, garden tours, and planting advice.

Measles on the rise, County urges vaccinations before international travel

The San Bernardino County Department of Public Health is urging residents to protect themselves by staying current with the measles-mumps-rubella – or MMR vaccine – as measles are on the rise.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed 58 measles cases nationally from Jan. 1 to March 14 of this year and the majority of the cases have been linked to international travel.

Measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Measles typically begins with fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes and within a few days a red, blotchy rash appears, usually first appearing on the face and spreading downward to the rest of the body. People can be contagious with measles four days before the onset of rash and four days after.

The CDC recommends that individuals get vaccinated with the MMR vaccine to protect themselves. Children less than six months of age who are planning on traveling should receive the MMR vaccine prior to departure. Teens and adults should also be up to date on their MMR.

If you have symptoms and believe you may have been exposed, please contact your healthcare provider immediately. Before visiting a healthcare facility, call ahead so that measures can be taken to prevent the spread of measles.

Climate credit coming to all Southern California Edison customers

A major climate credit is coming to all Southern California Edison Customers. On every customers’ April and October bill will be an $86 credit. SCE says that this will be the largest climate credit payout they have distributed since the State of California launched the program 10 years ago.

SCE says customers will receive the two credits automatically, with no action required.

Funding for the credit comes from California’s Greenhouse Gas Cap-and-Trade Program, which aims to reduce GHG emissions by requiring power plants, fuel providers and large industrial facilities that emit greenhouse gases to buy carbon pollution allowances.

MVCSD votes to oppose Initiative 1935 and approves temporary spending freeze

The Morongo Valley Community Services District Board of Directors held their regular 6 PM meeting last night at Covington Park’s multipurpose room.

The meeting began with Smith Marion and Co’s audit presentation, followed by the MVCSD Organizational Chart update, both of which the Board approved 4/0. While a “rounding-up” donation program for patrons of local businesses to donate to the CSD was on the agenda, Vice President Lynn Watt stated that by law only non-profits could utilize such a program. Though the Firefighters Auxiliary was discussed as a go-between non-profit. Watts suggested an online widget-based fundraising site instead, and the item was tabled for the next meeting.

Next, the Board discussed and adopted Resolution 2024-02 to oppose Initiative 1935, which limits the ability of voters and local and state governments to raise revenues for government services. Finance Director Johnny Tolbert was particularly vocal against the Initiative, saying, “Long story short, if they pass this, we’re going out of business.” Tolbert added the California Special Districts Association is encouraging all special districts to adopt the Resolution in opposition.

With the CSD’s preliminary budget draft currently at $48,000 over budget, the Board devised to plan a budget workshop on Saturday, April 6th at 10:00 AM. With other factors looming, such as SB525 which will raise the Fire Department’s wages, the Board also voted in favor of a spending freeze for the district once they receive their Type 1 Fire Engine back in service.

Western Joshua Tree conservation plan virtual meeting on April 4th

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife will be holding a virtual meeting about the development of a western Joshua Tree conservation plan, and the public’s feedback is invited.

According to the Department of Fish and Wildlife, the preparation of the conservation plan that they will be discussing at the virtual meeting is required by the Western Joshua Tree Conservation Act, and it’s a collaborative effort between the CDFW, California Native American tribes and other government agencies. If you are hearing this on terrestrial radio, you are probably within sight of a Joshua Tree or yucca brevifolia. It thrives here in the Mojave desert but wildfires, rapid development and climate change are threatening the slow-growing succulent.

The virtual meeting is taking place on Thursday, April 4 from 10 a.m. to noon. The CDFW will present a brief overview of the Western Joshua Tree Conservation Act, a status update on its implementation and ideas for conservation strategies currently in development.

Questions or comments can be submitted at any time before or after the meeting by e-mailing WJT@wildlife.ca.gov.
