The community is invited to support the many local seniors who have come together to individually sell their items. Twentynine Palms man arrested for suspected DUI and parole violation

After allegedly running a red light in Twentynine Palms, a man was arrested on suspicion of DUI and challenging deputies to a fight.

According to County Sheriff’s deputies, Brant Sherman, 38, was stopped after failing to stop at a traffic light on Twentynine Palms Highway near El Sol at around 6:30 p.m. on Monday (April 22).

Deputies report that after being stopped, Sherman challenged deputies to a fight, and they were forced to physically restrain him at the scene.

Brant Sherman was arrested for suspicion of resisting arrest and felony parole violation. Deputies say the San Bernardino County District Attorney recommended additional charges related to driving under the influence. Sherman is being held at the West Valley Detention center without bail.

Yucca Valley High School students become “Partners Against Violence” for Sexual Assault Awareness month

I spent lunchtime on the 24th at Yucca Valley High School with Partners against Violence and students taking their lunch hour to help spread the word to fellow students about sexual Violence.

Partners Against Violence’s mission is to provide support to survivors of violent crime, their families, and communities. They offer a hotline, counseling, advocacy, therapy, and education at no cost to those affected by sexual assault and other forms of Violence.

At this particular event, Partners Against Violence set up a booth. The booth stood alone in the quad, and the student bands played nearby. There was also a photo booth; students collected their friends to photograph their friendships.

Students came by to read the materials and say hi to the members of this collective advocacy group or their friends who were helping out. Students hung jeans around the perimeter of the booth. The jeans had colorful messages of support to victims, like, “You’re okay, it’s not your fault, and we support you.”

The Associated Student Body designed and produced a beautiful teal tee-shirt with the Partners against Violence logo on the front and the words “No, does not mean ‘Convince Me'” on the back. The proceeds from the shirts will go to pay for the students’ Prom Day.

“I am so incredibly proud of the group of ASB students that took on this student-led event to raise awareness on their campus. They worked hard and passionately to make the national campaign a local success. Well done.” -Gena Pliss, Community Outreach Specialist with Partners Against Violence.

Denim Day began in April of 1999 when the Executive Director of Peace Over Violence, Patti Giggans, heard about a young girl who was a victim of Violence. Her assailant was released after a conviction when the judge overseeing the appeal justified his decision by saying the young woman’s jeans were too tight and she had to have helped him.

Partner Against Violence firmly believes that Violence is preventable. Through collective efforts to cultivate a culture of respect, dignity, and safety for all, they advocate for policies that prioritize the well-being of individuals and promote a society free from Violence.

After lunch, the students returned to class, and the day went as usual. It left me with a heartwarming feeling that change is possible, and I have experienced the dedication of both advocates and students to take the work of awareness to the next level.

Mayor Steven Bilderain and members of the Interact club

With no public comment, the Council unanimously approved the request to vacate a portion of Foothill Drive from Bullion Avenue to Split Rock Avenue.

The Council then discussed the recommended community events grants, specifically a grant of $1,500 for the Dine 29 Food Festival and Restaurant Week and $18,500 to Distance Duet for free public choral performances. The Distance Duet was approved, and the Dine 29 Food Festival request will be held over until the next meeting. The organizers must return a locked-down date of the festival and information on participating restaurants.

The Council reviewed the City’s fee waiver policy document and requested proposed changes like limiting fee waivers to one or two days per calendar year for nonprofit facility rentals and adding language around reduced rental rates. The existing sample document will be revised by staff and returned to the Council at the next meeting.

The final recommendation to authorize the purchase of 20 flashing led flood signs in the amount of $57,551.55 to replace manual signage was approved. Joe Klink made the motion to buy the signs and accept CIRA (California Intergovernmental Risk Authority) funds for reimbursement, it was approved unanimously.

Cindy Bernard, founder of the Desert Trumpet and resident of Indian Cove, requested the Council to consider signage at the corner of Indian Cove and Twentynine.

The Council and residents thanked Interim-manager Larry Bowden for his hard work at the close of the meeting. H. Stone James will be the new City Manager.

Yucca Valley Planning Commission looks ahead to Old Town beautification, Aquatic Center, and other projects

At last night’s meeting, the Yucca Valley Planning Commission received the bi-annual Capital Improvement Projects Update. This report recaps all the town-funded development projects currently in motion. The Commission received updates on developments such as the Old Town Beautification and Sustainability Project, the Senior Center Improvement Project, the Aquatics and Recreation Center, and the Crack, Slurry, and Cape Seal Project.

Town Staff also presented a few updates on the Community Center Athletic Facility following two special meetings to collect public input held last week. Per community input, Staff reworked the plans to accommodate 14 pickleball courts rather than the previously planned 11. The town will also attempt to leave the existing basketball court in place for the time being; previous plans included its initial demolition for pickleball court construction. Input on the existing skate park favored a total redesign; the town plans to remove and reconstruct the existing park.

The Commission was very pleased with the report, with Vice Chair Vasconcelos commenting how notable these projects are for the community’s youth.

“For me, having children in the community and seeing all these things coming to pass that I didn’t have when I was growing up here, is really exciting for our entire community.”

The Commission also received and filed the Land Use Development Update. The Tiny Pony submitted a Land Use Compliance Review request to expand their outdoor space, and Walmart is taking steps towards development of a fueling station and convenience store on the northeast corner of their lot. The grading plans for Star Cafe, Nice Dream Ices, and Starbucks West were all approved, paving the way for construction.

Three unrelated fires handled by SB County Fire on Sunday (4/21)

Three unrelated fires were swiftly handled on Sunday (April 21) by local crews from San Bernardino County Fire.

At 1:10 p.m., a truck and trailer caught fire in the 7300 block of Cactus Dr. in Twentynine Palms. With assistance from the Combat Center, crews were able to knock down the fire within ten minutes and prevent flames from spreading to nearby structures or vegetation. No injuries were reported.

At 4:45 p.m., County Fire received multiple reports of a vegetation fire at mile marker 4.5 on Old Woman Springs Rd, just west of the highway. County crews were able to extinguish the three acre fire with assistance from Cal Fire, and Sheriff’s Deputies assisted with traffic control. No injuries were reported.

And at 11:30 p.m., what was reported as a structure fire near Twentynine Palms Highway and Godwin Road in Wonder Valley was determined to be a large trash fire on a residential property. Fire crews were able to control the blaze before it spread to the structure on the property. No injuries were reported.

Twentynine Palms City Council to discuss permanent road hazard signs tonight

The Twentynine Palms City Council meets tonight with an agenda that includes a public hearing on vacating a portion of a city street, and discussions on community events grants and permanent flood warning signs.

Tonight, the Twentynine Palms City Council meeting will host a public hearing on a request to vacate a portion of Foothill Drive from Bullion Avenue to Split Rock Avenue. The request came from engineering firm, NV5, to enable an ancillary application to the Reset Hotel project which is currently under construction.

The council will then discuss recommended community events grants, specifically a grant of $1,500 for the Dine 29 Food Festival + Restaurant Week, and $18,500 to Distance Duet for free public choral performances.

Next, the council will consider an update to the Facility Rental Fee Waiver Policy which, dating back to 1989, does not place a limit on the number of days that a qualified organization can rent city facilities for free. Since then, the Recreation Department has permitted one free rental day per calendar year and council may update policy language to reflect current procedures. The topic recently resurfaced when a local church requested a fee waiver for a multi-day rental of the community center gymnasium.

Finally, the council will consider installing permanent LED-illuminated signs to warn travelers against flooded roadways. Making the signs permanent could reduce response time and injury risk to employees installing temporary signage during breaking storms. Staff is recommending the signs be installed at 14 ‘hot spots’ across town.

Yucca Valley Planning Commission to receive reports

The Yucca Valley Planning Commission will receive updates on current and future projects. In addition to the Land Development Update, the Commission will also receive and file the report on capital projects. The capital projects update is brought to the Commission bi-annually; Town Staff will present on any projects underway, their status, and any known issues.

Tonight’s meeting is open to the public and begins at 6 p.m. at the Yucca Valley Community Center.

Joshua Tree man arrested for suspected criminal threats, concealed knife

A Joshua Tree man is facing charges of making criminal threats and intimidating a witness after allegedly threatening his father.

On April 17 just before 1 a.m., County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report from a victim who said he was threatened by his own son. The victim told deputies that his son, Michael Peres, 20, came into the victim’s apartment near Sunburst St. and Verbena Road and began breaking furniture and a vehicle with a knife. According to the victim, Peres threatened to “get him” if he told law enforcement.

Responding deputies searched the area, and located Peres near Twentynine Palms Highway at around 1:30 a.m. The report says that he was concealing a large blade hunting knife, but that he was otherwise detained without incident.

Michael Peres was arrested for investigation into vandalism and carrying a concealed dagger, and was booked into the West Valley Detention Center on $30,000 bail.

He is being arraigned in San Bernardino County Court this morning on felony charges of making criminal threats that would lead to great bodily injury, preventing a victim from making a police report, and violating court orders related to domestic violence, with three enhancements for use of a deadly weapon.
