In celebration of the original Pony Express in 1860-1861, the mail will ride again on down Mane Street in Pioneertown, as part of Grubstake Days Saturday. Reporter Heather Clisby has details …
Organized by the Yucca Valley Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Friends of Pioneertown and Pioneertown Realty, the Pony Express will gallop down Mane Street in Pioneertown at high noon on Saturday, May 29. As part of Grubstake Days, rider Skyler Fells will ride Fiona down the middle of Pioneertown to deliver the mail to Pioneertown Postmaster Janet Ariza and 3rd District Supervisor Dawn Rowe.
A souvenir commemorative cancellation stamp, approved by the United States Postal Service, will be applied to all mail going through the Pioneertown Station May 29 through June 29. Yucca Valley Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Wanda Stadum explains:
“The stamp is a one-time deal. It’s approved by the United States Postal Service to cancel all mail that comes through the Pioneertown station. This cancellation stamp will be used May 29 through June 29 and then it will be destroyed. So any mail that you want to have a little souvenir of, it becomes a collectible. So send your mail through the Pioneertown Post Office and get your cancelled stamp. It’s a fun thing to do – a souvenir of Grubstake Days!” said Stadum.
Complimentary desert postcards and postage are also available at the chamber office thru May 27, 56711 Twentynine Palms Highway, and the day of the event at the OK Corral in Pioneertown.
