PLANNING COMMISSION POSTPONES DECISION ON HOME-BASED GUN SHOP

Morality or legality; these were some of the issues the Yucca Valley Planning Commission wrestled with at its meeting last night. Neighbors came out in force to argue against issuing a home-occupancy permit for a gun seller in a residential neighborhood. Managing editor, Tami Roleff, was at the 3 ½ hour long meeting and files this report…
It didn’t take long for the appeal of a home occupancy permit for Luke Mintz to sell firearms out of his home at 8205 Keats Avenue in Yucca Valley to devolve into a discussion about the morality of guns in society. Not only were Mintz’s neighbors opposed to the prospect of selling guns, but so was Commissioner Warren Lavender. “We don’t want to be annoyed by the noise, dust, trash, electrical outages, but we don’t mind exposing ourselves to the added dangers of being shot…. You will be putting more guns into the population.” Deputy Town Manager Shane Stueckle reminded both commissioners and the audience what they were there to decide. “This is a land use issue, not a Second Amendment issue.” Chair Tim Humphreville said it didn’t matter what product was being sold, the Commission needed to decide if home-based businesses were appropriate for residential neighborhoods. “No matter if they’re selling red wagons, Mary Kay, Tupperware or weapons, it meets the criteria for a home occupancy permit.” After nearly two hours of discussion, the Commissioners voted to table the permit to its July 9 meeting.
