Plane crashes in Amboy after attempted takeoff from National Trails Hwy.

A small plane crashed in Amboy on Labor Day after attempting to takeoff from National Trails Highway.

On Monday at around 12:30 p.m., County Sheriff’s deputies with the Morongo Basin Sheriff’s Station responded to the 87000 Block of National Trails Highway in Amboy after receiving a report about a small plane crashing into the desert area near the roadway.

Responding alongside San Bernardino County Fire, the California Highway Patrol, and rangers from the California State Park Police, they determined that a Cessna 152 airplane landed near Roy’s Café in Amboy earlier in the day. Deputies report that the plane taxied onto the pavement of National Trails Highway and accelerated westbound down the roadway for takeoff. They say the plane became airborne, but the starboard wing struck a street caution sign, causing the plane to overturn and roll off the pavement and into the open desert.

The pilot and passenger were described as “uninjured,” but the Sheriff’s Department did not specify whether they remained at the scene, or if any criminal charges are being considered for the pilot. Z107.7 will update this story as we learn more.
