With Thanksgiving on Thursday, many people will be traveling over the hill and through the desert to spend the holiday weekend with friends and family. The Automobile Club of Southern California is projecting that more people will be traveling this weekend than have traveled since 2005. Traffic volumes are expected to be up more than 5 percent since last year, with 3.6 million people traveling by car in Southern California, most of them on Wednesday and Sunday. To make your holiday travel easier, try to travel during non-peak hours, either late in the evening or very early in the morning. The highest traffic routes are Interstate 15 between Fontana and Barstow, Baker to Las Vegas, and Interstate 10 between Beaumont and Indio. Plan ahead, leave plenty of time for delays and stops for food, water, and rest breaks. Use the Caltrans Quickmap to check on traffic conditions.
