PIONEERTOWN RESIDENTS REACT TO A MAJOR DEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL

Local social media message boards were deluged with comments over the past few days following a post on Wednesday concerning two proposed commercial developments in Pioneertown. The post unleashed a hornet’s nest of protests for projects that are barely more than conceptual at this point. Reporter Mike Lipsitz has some details that may help put the proposals into perspective…

While a proposed 12-unit trailer motel on a previously disturbed three-quarter acre parcel across Pioneertown Road from the landmark Pappy & Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace remains under review by county planners community focus has taken aim at a proposed expansion of the 19-room Pioneertown Motel. County Land Use Services only recently initiated the review process for the proposal which envisions the addition of forty-seven guest cabins, a bunkhouse, stables, day spa, outdoor pool, retail and restaurant space, and a 3,500 square-foot event venue. The development would see the motel property triple in size. Brothers Matt and Mike French own the motel and live in Pioneertown. They urge locals to reserve judgment for a few weeks while they prepare a presentation they promise will ease community concern for open space, wildlife habitat, traffic, and appropriateness. Aside from that, the proposal remains a long way from approval as the trail ahead includes review by multiple agencies and the planning commission, as well as a public review process and hearing.
