Pioneer Days: Forever Came Calling, Fake Dad, Jimmy Dale, Malcolm, MEGG, Field Rush all play free show tonight at 5PM

Listen to the full interview here:

If you remember the last time I talked with Joseph Candelaria, it was right before he was heading to Long Beach to play Warped Tour.

Joseph: “You know, it was cool for this version of the band being like predominantly desert based to really get a great moment for like, hey, like these songs that we mess around with in our garage, you know, they’ve they’ve had an effect and like people care about them. So that was cool.”

That garage he mentioned is located in Twentynine Palms, where Forever Came Calling sprung from the familiar teenage notion to get out of your hometown. And they did just that in 2010, driving across the country and eventually playing Warped Tour for the first time.

Forever Came Calling cut live performance teeth right here in Twentynine Palms, at the city’s oldest annual celebration Pioneer Day.

Friday’s Line-Up

Joseph ran through the bands that will be supporting Forever Came Calling at Friday’s show:

Jospeh: “I’ll start with the local guys. So Malcolm, he used to go under a moniker called Family Thief. He’s a local guy. He hasn’t played the desert since he, what, probably 2016, something like that. So it’s been a little while.

Jimmy Dale, his band’s called Kill Jill. And he used to play in FCC years ago. And it was really cool. So I cut my teeth with Jimmy and seeing him continue on his dad’s legacy. And in my humble opinion, maybe better. I mean, he’s doing these really cool syncopated breakdowns that he’ll explain to me, and I’m like, dude, I don’t, that my brain is not that good!

MEGG, we met her on Warped Tour. We played the same stage. I just loved her energy and her band’s energy. They were really talented. And she’s someone that I think really kind of personifies a lot of what Warped Tour is about.

And then Fake Dad… they’re a great band that I just think is great rock and roll. They have some really killer hooks, interesting parts. They’re dancey and the lyrics are great. So this could be a show where it’s like, oh yeah, I saw that band like when they didn’t even have a single yet. You know, they’re that good.

And then Field Rush is my friend Jin. He’s from San Diego. They are more in line with Forever Came Calling, a little more pop punky stuff like that. They’re just a really great young band full of three dudes who take care of their community. They’re passionate about the San Diego scene.

Live music supports community

So, why does music and especially live music still matter?

Joseph was quick to answer: “Community more than anything. When you look around in a room that live music is happening, people are bonded to each other and they’re sharing moments that they might not share anywhere else. And I think that’s something that we need now more than ever. “
