PEOPLE RECEIVING SSI NEED TO ACT TO GET DEPENDENT CHILD PAYMENTS

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who don’t file tax returns will start receiving their automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department in early May. Anyone who receives SSI and has children under 17 should not wait for their payment but should contact the IRS immediately. Managing editor Tami Roleff explains why…

People receiving SSI benefits who did not file 2018 or 2019 taxes, and have qualifying children under age 17 should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should immediately go to the IRS’s webpage. By filling out information on the non-filer’s webpage, they will also receive their $500 per dependent child payment in addition to the $1200 individual payment. If this information is not provided by May 5, they will only receive the individual payment. They will have to file a tax return next year in order to obtain the additional $500 payment per eligible child.

The IRS warns people of scams related to the economic impact payments. There is no fee required to receive your payment.

Go to www.irs.gov/coronavirus/non-filers-enter-payment-info-here and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Information section to provide your information. SSI recipients who have dependent children and did not file 2018 or 2019 taxes need to act by Tuesday, May 5, in order to receive additional payments for their eligible children quickly.
