PENALTY RELIEF AVAILABLE FOR PROPERTY TAXPAYERS

If the stress of life in the face of COVID-19 were not enough, it’s also happening during tax season. Thankfully, property taxpayers are getting a much-needed break from San Bernardino County. Reporter Heather Clisby has the details …

San Bernardino County Auditor-Controller, Treasurer, and Tax Collector Ensen Mason announced a waiver of penalties on late property tax payments for most county taxpayers. Mason will grant a waiver of penalties for payments made after April 10 but no later than June 30 of this year on qualifying properties.

Mason stated that while tax collectors are bound by law to the April 10 deadline, he’d appealed to the California Association of County Treasurer and Tax Collectors for maximum legal taxpayer relief for those who qualify for the Homeowners’ Tax Exemption and some small businesses. Mason expressed concern for schools and other government entities on the receiving end of such funds but noted that public health and safety were the priority.

Those with questions should call the Tax Collectors’ Office at 909-387-8308. Tax payments can be paid over the phone or online at www.MyTaxCollector.com. Taxpayers can also mail a check to: 268 W. Hospitality Lane, First Floor, San Bernardino, CA 92415-0360. Due to the emergency declared by San Bernardino County, the ATC building is closed to the public until further notice, and tax payments will not be accepted at the building itself except though the drop box located just outside the front door.
