PEDESTRIAN STRUCK ON THE SHOULDER OF THE HIGHWAY IN JOSHUA TREE

UPDATED 9 a.m. with additional information

A 37-year-old Yucaipa woman was hit and injured on Highway 62 as she was walking along the highway at the west end of Joshua Tree Friday night. The California Highway Patrol said Maria Brown was walking westbound on the highway in the number 2 lane about 6:45 p.m., when she was hit by a 2017 Ford Transit van, being driven by Noah Williams, 21, of Maryland. Williams noticed Brown—who was wearing dark-colored clothing—at the last second, and tried to turn the Ford to the left. The van’s right-side mirror struck Brown in the left arm. Williams stopped and helped Brown; Morongo Basin Ambulance transported Brown to Desert Hospital with moderate injuries. Neither Williams nor his passenger, Christina Bautista, 19, of San Jose, were injured. The California Highway Patrol reminds residents to walk on the shoulder of the road and to wear bright or reflective clothing when it’s dark.
