The Desert Institute at Joshua Tree National Park and the 29 Palms Historical Society is hosting Barbara Gothard, discussing her art and humanities project, “Contradictions – Bringing the Past Forward.” Reporter Hilary Sloane will give you the details…
In 1910, an advertisement in the Los Angeles Herald sought to recruit “colored,” the term used at that time, homesteaders to the area. Twenty-three homesteaders responded. Gothard will share the cultural relevance of this history, focusing on identity, community, and family. The presentation will include a display of Gothard’s artwork, a discussion of the project, and her plans for her November Artist Residency at BoxoPROJECTS in Joshua Tree.
This in-person lecture at the Old Schoolhouse, 6760 National Park Dr, in 29 Palms, will be held on Friday, October 8 at 7 p.m. The fee for the presentation is $5.00 paid at the door.
