Combination classes occur when students from two grades are placed under the instruction of one teacher in one classroom. Parents of students gathered at last night’s MUSD board meeting to express their disapproval of these classes at Landers Elementary and other schools throughout the
district. Residents expressed concern over the sizes of these classes, and wondered if additional teachers could be hired. After the meeting, MUSD
Superintendent Tom Baumgarten stated that the district is in the process of hiring three additional teachers, which will help reduce overall class sizes. The board also held a work study session at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the student achievement plans for the following schools: Twentynine Palms
Elementary, Oasis Elementary, Condor Elementary, and Yucca Valley Elementary. In open session. the board adopted the student achievement plans from the work study session and was treated to a brief musical performance by Landers Elementary School students. Lastly, the board discussed the possibility of offering recognitions to outstanding school bus drivers in the district, but stated that discussions would have to be made with the district’s transportation provider before any decisions are made.
