Firefighters made significant progress yesterday in containing the Palmer Fire straddling the border of Riverside and San Bernardino counties. An update by the Riverside County Fire Department at 5:30 p.m. declared the brush fire was 80 percent contained and had burned 3,874 acres. The fire started at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in San Timoteo Canyon. The canyon divides the cities of Redlands and Moreno Valley. About 100 homes on the Riverside County side and nine homes on the Redlands side were evacuated, totaling nearly 450 residents. As of 4 p.m. Sunday, all evacuations were lifted, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
