OUR NATIONAL PARKS ARE IN DIRE NEED OF FIXING

A diverse coalition is calling for more funding for national parks. Reporter David Haldane has the details…

Joshua Tree National Park may need a remake.

That’s the opinion of a coalition of business, conservation and veterans’ groups calling, in honor of national Infrastructure Week, for a dedicated
funding stream to address the national park system’s 11-billion-dollar backlog of deferred maintenance. The money is needed to repair roads, trails, staff buildings, visitor centers, sewage systems, water lines, power lines, docks and more. Carolyn Cavecche, of the Orange County Taxpayers Association, says the funding should be prioritized before costs rise even higher.

“The more you put off paying to fix something, the more expensive it gets. And if we don’t focus on taking care of our national parks right now, then we’re going to be in an even bigger crisis down the road.”

In addition to Joshua Tree, California is home to Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.
