OTHER NEW LAWS WILL AFFECT CALIFORNIA DRIVERS

Other new laws set to take effect January 1 will affect California drivers. Drivers will no longer be allowed to wear a headset or earphones that covers both ears, or have earplugs in both ears, while driving a motor vehicle or a bicycle. Electrically motorized boards will also be regulated and restricted as of January 1. It will be a crime to operate an electrically motorized board while under the influence of drugs or alcohol; operators must be 16 or older, operators must wear a safety helmet and safety gear to increase visibility at night; and boards can only be used on roads with speed limits set at 35 miles per hour or slower. Other new laws that California drivers should be aware of. If you are a scofflaw and haven’t paid your traffic ticket, the state is willing to forgive your fine. A person is eligible for the traffic amnesty program if no payments have been made after September 30, 2015, to a collection program for fines or bail already due. And if you blew off your court appearance, the judge has the discretion to remove the civil assessment of up to $300.

The Department of Motor Vehicles must implement an automatic voter registration process for qualified residents who apply for a driver’s license or identification card, or submit a change of address to the DMV.
