For many, a highlight of the annual Morongo Basin Orchid Festival is the opportunity to attend some of the classes offered. Reporter Mike Lipsitz rolls up his sleeves and takes out his notebook…
Register now for one of the hands-on classes offered at the festival Saturday and Sunday, October 6 and 7 at the Gubler Orchids Learning Center in Landers. Kids’ classes are free and cover cultivation and construction of a mini-greenhouse. Each student will go home with a three-inch orchid.
Those age 16 and up can choose from three classes. The first features Dendrobium and Oncidium orchids, and includes transplanting a blooming specimen to take home.
Next class is the cultivation and care of the world’s most popular orchid: the Phalaenopsis. Participants will transplant and take home a beautiful bloom; each class is $15.
The orchid arrangement class will have participants create and build an orchid planter to keep. The $25 fee includes two blooming orchids, a decorative container, and care instructions.
Proceeds from all classes benefit children and veterans. More information at gublerorchids.com/class-registration or call 760-364-4900. Note classes fill quickly.
