The outdoor-loving residents of Morongo Basin enjoy an embarrassment of riches when it comes to hiking opportunities. But hiking can also bring emotional healing, and a live online event tomorrow will explore that concept deeper. Reporter Heather Clisby has the details…
In the spring of 2018, avid hiker Sydney Williams had a revelation as she reached a San Diego summit. Unemployed and diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes six months prior, she realized hiking had replaced her habit of mindlessly eating and drinking. She realized she was physically pushing through her emotions instead and “Hiking My Feelings” was born.
Thursday, May 7, the Desert Institute will host a live online event for Williams to tell her story of how she and her husband, Barry, decided to launch a movement for movement. They explore how trauma manifests in the body and how thriving outdoors helps us heal. Hiking My Feelings now hosts storytelling events, workshops, retreats and book readings.
Thursday’s digital storytelling event, called “Hike + Heal: Sydney’s Story” will begin at 4 p.m. and viewers can check it out at joshuatree.org/live. There will also be opportunity for Q&A with Williams.
