The popular Old Schoolhouse Lecture Series on Friday nights continues this week with a focus on a well-worn story in these parts, the tragic story of “Willie Boy.” Reporter Heather Clisby has details …
This Friday, November 12, The Desert Institute and the 29 Palms Historical Society present another Old Schoolhouse Lecture, this one focusing on the sad tale of Willie Boy.
More than a century ago, a cocky young man, Willie Boy, shot and killed William Mike, a local shaman, and eloped with William Mike’s daughter, Carlota, who was killed by the pursuing posse.
The story resulted in a book by Harry Lawton and a 1969 film starring Robert Redford and Robert Blake. Clifford E. Trafzer, author of “Willie Boy & The Last Western Manhunt”, will explore this saga from a Native American perspective. Trafzer is a professor of history and Costo Chair in American Indian Affairs at UC Riverside.
This is an in-person event that will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the 29 Palms Historical Society, 6760 National Park Drive. Admission is $5.
