ODOR ADVISORY FOR SALTON SEA

The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued an odor advisory Thursday for the Salton Sea. The winds and humidity allow water from the bottom of the sea to rise, which releases hydrogen sulfide, which produces the rotten egg smell. Some people may feel ill from the smell, but the air quality district says there are no long-term effects from the odor, and the concentration of hydrogen sulfide has not exceeded state standards. If the southeasterly winds continue, residents in the Coachella Valley and the Morongo Basin may experience the odors. The odor advisory is in effect through Sunday.
