NO MORE INCANDESCENT LIGHT BULBS IN CALIFORNIA

Starting January 1, all light bulbs manufactured in California will have to meet new energy standards, which means incandescent bulbs will be gone once the stores sell their existing stock. Experts say the move will save money and energy, and help the fight against climate change. Reporter Tanisha Cureton gives more details…

Here’s an idea: Experts say Californians can save money and energy by choosing LED or CFL bulbs. Starting January 1, the incandescent bulbs that have been around since Edison’s time will be illegal to manufacture. Noah Horowitz, senior scientist with the Natural Resources Defense Council, has this to say about the new law.

“LEDs are a far superior product. They give off the same light that an incandescent does, but it doesn’t waste energy. And in addition, LEDs last up to 25 years, where with an incandescent, you had to change the bulb almost once a year, which was a real hassle.”

Opponents says the new bulbs are more expensive and an unnecessary cost on businesses and consumers. However, the cost of LEDs has decreased to $2 to $3 dollars apiece, which can save users $50 to $150 over a lifetime.
