Some of the new laws that take effect in 2021 will affect motorists. As of January 1, the Move Over, Slow Down law has been amended to apply to local streets and roads. Drivers who approach a stationary emergency vehicle that’s displaying its emergency lights—including tow trucks and Caltrans vehicles—must move to another lane, if possible, or slow down on all roadways, not just freeways.
Bystanders who see a child younger than 6 years of age in a vehicle who is in immediate danger from heat or cold, or other dangerous circumstances, are exempt from civil or criminal liability if they break into the vehicle to rescue the child.
