New Joshua Tree business league moves forward
After more than a year of organizing, the Joshua Tree Association of Business and Culture (JTABC) has officially incorporated as a 501(c)(6) business league. The group held a public meeting on February 10 as it began building its membership base.
Joshua Tree is an unincorporated community. It does not have its own city government or a chamber of commerce. JTABC board members say this leaves the town with limited representation in county planning and development decisions. Vice President Seth Zaharias told attendees that the goal is to change that.
“Joshua Tree is unincorporated, and we don’t have a great voice… and our goal is a chamber of commerce 2.0. and to give this community an organized voice.”
The association is structured as a 501(c)(6), also known as a business league. Unlike a traditional nonprofit, that designation allows the group to lobby on behalf of its members.
Voting membership is open to businesses and nonprofits registered in the 92252 zip code for $200 per year. Associate memberships are also available.
Among the group’s early priorities are public trash cans in downtown Joshua Tree and safer pedestrian crossings along Highway 62.
Board members say they support tourism, but want growth that benefits local residents and businesses. The new association hopes to present a unified front as it begins conversations with San Bernardino County officials.
