For years Morongo Basin has lacked a local resource for residents in crisis, suffering from acute mental health or substance abuse disorders, and in need of inpatient care. As a result, many have had to travel to Loma Linda University or Arrowhead Regional Medical Center—more than 70 miles away. Still others have found themselves untreated and incarcerated. All that is about to change the end of this month with the opening of the Morongo Oasis Crisis Residential Treatment Facility in Joshua Tree. Reporter Mike Lipsitz has your invitation to grand opening celebration …
The $9 million, 20-bed, 11,000 square-foot facility opens its doors for a public celebration on Tuesday, July 31 from 10 a.m. to noon. Attendees will enjoy light refreshments, hear about services, tour the facility which will operate 24/7 providing crisis intervention for those diagnosed with mental health and/or co-occurring substance abuse disorders. Paid for by a state-funded grant program, the facility will offer an alternative to costly inpatient hospitalization or incarceration for those facing mental health crises. A first for Morongo Basin, behavioral health services will be available in a home-like environment. Also available will be immediate outpatient crisis stabilization services including intervention, medication support, individual and group therapy, case management, referrals and other support.
