New California State laws go into effect Jan. 1

As is done every year, the State of California implements new laws on January 1.

Among the rules taking effect, law enforcement officers across the state are now required to provide a reason for why they have conducted a traffic stop. California Assembly Bill 2773, signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom in September, requires that all police in the state provide an explanation as to why a traffic stop is being conducted, though there is an exception for emergency situations.

Other state laws relate to work from home requirements, specifically Senate Bill 731, which requires employers to provide notice to remote employees about return-to-office requirements.

The state is also expanding Medi-Cal health coverage to all adults regardless of health care, and raising minimum wage to $16 an hour, up from $15.50.
