Minimum wage earners will be getting a pay raise as of January 1. The state’s minimum wage increases to $10.50 per hour for employers with 25 or fewer employees, and $11 per hour for employers with 26 or more employees. Managing editor Tami Roleff lists some of the other employment laws taking effect in 2018 thanks to laws passed this year…
If you work for a company with 20 to 49 employees, the law will require your employer to offer you up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to bond with a new baby, adopted child, or foster child.
Employers with five or more employees will be prohibited from asking about criminal history information—with limited exceptions—on job applications at any time before a conditional offer of employment has been made. In addition, employers will no longer be allowed to ask about a job applicant’s prior salary or benefits.
Bartenders and wait staff will be required to take mandatory training on alcohol responsibility and obtain an alcohol server certificate. And employers with 50 or more employees must provide supervisors with sexual harassment prevention training.
And finally, employers must ask for a warrant or subpoena before granting Immigration and Customs Enforcement access to the premises or employment records.
