A Nevada woman was seriously injured when she was hit by a car while riding a bicycle early Saturday morning. According to California Highway Patrol Officer Randy O’Brien, Jacqueline Carrizosa, 26, was riding her bike westbound on Highway 62 in the number 2 lane of the highway, just east of Whitefeather Road in Joshua Tree about 1 a.m. Coming up behind her, also in the westbound number 2 lane, was Fatima Vasquez-Arnao, 32, of Moreno Valley, in a 2010 Ford Raptor. Vasquez-Arnao hit Carrizosa from the rear, and Carrizosa was thrown from the bicycle onto the pavement. She was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center where she was treated for a broken back and had a kidney removed. Vasquez-Arnao was not injured in the crash. Carrizosa was training for a 640-mile off-road motorcycle race, Vegas to Reno, which starts today. O’Brien said Carrizosa’s bicycle had both front and rear lights, but added that the fact that Carrizosa was not riding on the shoulder of the road, and that Vasquez-Arnao did not yield three feet to the bicyclist were both factors that contributed to the crash. A GoFundMe site has been set up for Carrizosa.
