NEIGHBORS NOT HAPPY WITH PROPOSED PIPE’S CANYON CAMPGROUND

In recent years, the steady increase of visitors to Joshua Tree National Park has put pressure on area hotels, Airbnb properties, and even campgrounds. Campgrounds in the National Park are routinely filled to capacity by Friday afternoon, leaving visitors to scramble for suitable spots to pitch their tent or park their RV. A recent application at the county’s Department of Land Use Services indicates that some developers are hoping to cash in on the situation, and some neighbors aren’t happy about it. Reporter Mike Lipsitz fills us in…
Planners in the County of San Bernardino’s Department of Land Use Services have under review a proposal to develop a 40-acre parcel along Pipes Canyon Road into a 35-site campground complete with RV hookups, improved roadways, and infrastructure for electrical, septic and water. The applicant, Whistler Real Estate Holdings, LLC., is a real estate developer that has completed similar projects in other locations. But under growing public pressure, the project, which was originally submitted for review under a Minor Use Permit, was last week changed to a Conditional Use Permit. The new designation requires a much more intensive review process from county planners. Those opposed to the project claim it will place too much stress on the fragile ecosystem there, as well as its scenic and cultural resources. They point to the already shrinking groundwater supply, disappearing scenic vistas, noise, traffic and more. Those opposed have organized a Facebook group and a petition at Change.org.
