The United States Navy is celebrating its 244th birthday today. The U.S. Navy was established by the Continental Congress as the Continental Navy to disrupt munitions ships that were supplying the British Navy. The Continental Navy became the U.S. Navy on October 13, 1775. In a video message to the nation’s sailors and Marines, Admiral Mike Gilday said today’s Navy now has 290 ships, of which about one-third are currently deployed at sea. He said the US Navy and Marine Corps are “America’s ‘away team.’” He said the Navy renews its commitment to be ready to ensure peace, stability, and security. Happy 244th birthday, U.S. Navy.
