Yardwork in the desert can be almost impossible with the extreme heat, however even under these circumstances volunteers are still willing to give back. Reach Out Morongo Basin would like to recognize volunteers from the Marine Corps Air-Ground Combat Center. Reporter Eric Knabe has who’s helping and how they help those in need…
Naval personnel from the 2nd Class Petty Officers’ Association were organized by Reach Out Morongo Basin to help disabled Korean War veteran Al Telez of Twentynine Palms with yard work. The volunteers spent four hours at Telez’s home raking weeds and removing shrubs to beautify his yard.
Naval chiefs and chief-selects from the Combat Center cleared brush from the yard of disabled senior Penelope Benson-Wright in Twentynine Palms this past weekend. The project was coordinated by City of Twentynine Palms Code Enforcement Officer Jim Thornburg, Reach Out Morongo Basin and CPO Jenna Uhrich; Benson-Wright’s yard had many years of overgrowth that was presenting a fire hazard and needed to be cleared.
With some areas of brush over seven feet high along fences and three to four feet high through most of the yard, these hardy Naval volunteers had their work cut out for them, but they were dauntless in the face of bugs, heat and even a few snakes.
Seniors and the disabled can get help with their yard work and minor home repairs, through this same program. To be eligible, residents must own their homes or have a signed release from the landlord/property owner, and work must be able to be performed within the allotted time. To sign up or to get more information, please contact Reach Out Executive Director Robin Schlosser at 760-361-1410.
