Last week, residents and returning visitors Joshua Tree were saddened to learn that longtime locally-owned restaurant Natural Sisters has closed.
The closure was delivered with little fanfare, simply a sign in the window saying that the restaurant, known for salads, sandwiches, and juices, was permanently closed. The bustling outdoor patio, located on the corner of Twentynine Palms and Sunset Rd in downtown Joshua Tree, had gone quiet.
The restaurant was originally opened by “natural sisters” Kathleen and Christy Lopez in 2009. After the death of Kathleen only a year into the opening of the restaurant, it has been more recently operated by her family members, including her children Justin, Gerrod, and Jessica.
Jessica spoke with Z107.7 about the closure, saying that the restaurant’s lease had expired, and the owners were unable to come to a new agreement for the space, describing herself and her family as “heartbroken.”
Though they are sad to close, their time at the restaurant proved meaningful. She said, “The business has always been kind of an homage to our mom who passed away a year into the business being open.
Reflecting on the legacy of Natural Sisters, Jessica said, “We’re so proud to have been able to serve our community all these years with our high quality food and excellent service. Providing jobs in the community meant so much to us. We’re so blessed to have had the most wonderful customers and employees over the last 14 years.”
