The Morongo Unified School District Board of Trustees met last night in regular session, holding court with the current Miss Yucca Valley and voting on the health and welfare provider for district employees. Assignment reporter Chris Fleischman is here with more details from last night’s meeting…
During last night’s (March 22) regular session meeting, the Morongo Unified School District Board of Trustees were greeted by the 2022 Miss Yucca Valley recipient, Lei Lonie Liechti, who was there to represent the rest of the court. Later, during public comment, the board also heard from a former MUSD student and current district employee, Rhianna Nordlund, who spoke about the importance of social-emotional learning counselors and social workers in the district.
The trustees unanimously approved the consent agenda, except for one item which was tabled for further discussion. President Cathy Nelson requested a further discussion of a punching bag donated to Yucca Valley High School for the purposes of de-escalation and “sensory needs.” Ultimately, the board approved the donation with a 4-1 vote, with President Nelson voting against it.
The board later voted unanimously to change the district health and welfare provider to CalPERS, pending approval from the Morongo Teachers Association and the California School Employees Association, in addition to approving the contract Stacy Smalling, Assistant Superintendent, Human Resources.
The board looks ahead to a special meeting this Thursday (March 24) at 9:00 a.m. at the MUSD district office at 5715 Utah Trail in Twentynine Palms, during which they will discuss the employment of a new superintendent.
