MOTORCYCLISTS AND CONCERTS MEAN HEAVY TRAFFIC LOCALLY AND ON I-10

Motorists are advised to prepare for heavy traffic on Highway 62 and the Interstate 10 freeway this weekend. Expect to see hundreds of motorcycle riders as they travel through the Morongo Basin on Highway 62 on their way to, and from, the Laughlin River Run. The River Run starts today (April 27) and goes through Sunday (May 1). Also, the 5th annual Aether Rally will convene in Pioneertown Friday (April 29) Group motorcycle rides will commence on both paved and unpaved roads, and 4WD excursions will depart for Joshua Tree from their Pioneertown campsite thorough Sunday (May 1).  Because of its small size, a motorcycle can be easily hidden in a car’s blind spots or masked by objects or backgrounds outside a car. Take an extra moment to look for motorcycles, whether you’re changing lanes or turning at intersections. Motorcyclists often slow by downshifting or merely rolling off the throttle, thus not activating the brake light. Allow more following distance, say 3 or 4 seconds. At intersections, predict a motorcyclist may slow down without visual warning. In addition to motorcycles on state Route 62, the Stagecoach Festival in Indio is expected to cause traffic delays on the I-10 freeway. Expect heavier-than-usual traffic Friday and Monday
