A Morongo Valley man shot himself in the leg Sunday with a homemade shotgun. According to Sheriff’s reports, Michael Oneal, 31, of the 11000 block of Cholla Avenue, was making the shotgun out of pipes in his garage about 1:30 p.m. While trying to see if the pipes would fit, the report states that a buck shot shell accidentally fell inside the pipe and hit the primer, and Oneal unintentionally shot himself in his right thigh. The shell made a 3-inch hole in his leg. Oneal’s girlfriend drove him to Desert Hospital in Palm Springs for treatment. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department reminds residents that the manufacture of homemade weapons is not only illegal, but dangerous.
