MORONGO VALLEY CSD GETS A SURPRISE GRANT, TALKS TRAFFIC SAFETY

The Morongo Valley Community Services District Board of Directors received unexpected, yet positive information during last night’s regular monthly meeting. During a public report on Covington Park, the board was informed by astute community members that the district had been awarded $180,000 in state bond funds for updates and renovations to the park. After some discussion on why the district was not informed of the award, Director of Operations Gary Yearsley volunteered to work on claiming the funds for the district. At last night’s meeting, the board also spoke with Caltrans District 8 representative Shane Massoud regarding numerous traffic-related concerns along Highway 62 in Morongo Valley, including the need for reflective signs, replacing missing delineators, and drivers exceeding posted speed limits. Massoud stated that all comments would be submitted to Caltrans officials for review. The board also approved a resolution granting power to the district’s director of operations to accept post-disaster public assistance grants on behalf of the board.

The board also discussed a method of offering compensatory time to Morongo Valley Fire Chief Gary Yearsley for working outside of scheduled paid shifts. After lengthy discussions, the board tabled the discussion until its December meeting pending review of Yearsley’s contract with the CSD.

Lastly, Morongo Valley Fire Chief Gary Yearsley expressed tremendous gratitude for the recent donation of an industrial freezer unit from Home Depot for the fire department, orchestrated by a community member.
