Yesterday, we reported on state and county results on assessment tests related to the new Common Core curricula. Reporter Dan Stork looks at local results, and at how to understand them…
The results for Morongo Unified School District students on the first-ever California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress very nearly matched state-wide results, and were better than the figures reported for the average of San Bernardino County school districts: 44 percent of MUSD third to eighth, and eleventh graders met or exceeded proficiency standards for English Language Arts (the number was also 44 percent for the state), while 32 percent hit those standards for math (compared to 33 percent statewide.)
A question of concern is why—comparisons aside—the numbers seem so low in general. Reasons offered on the state education web sites include:
The new tests and curricula are more rigorous than their predecessors.
The results should be viewed only as a baseline for interpretation of future results.
