The Morongo Unified School District had a GATE Celebration displaying projects and programs that local students accomplished during the 2012-2013 school year. Reporter Chanda-Lyn Fraschetti gives the story…
The Gate Program offers after-school training to students that have been identified as “talented and gifted.” This year’s celebration took place at Copper Mountain College, allowing schools to display various projects, artwork, perform dramatic pieces, and photos from field trips the students took. Teacher and GATE Liaison from Twentynine Palms Jr. High School, Jim Cottrell tells us what his students learned. “We started out with video game programming and we used the scratch program produced by MIT and they produced games and animations.” Topics ranged from land mapping of the desert at La Contenta Jr. High School, studying the basics of crime scene investigating at Onaga Elementary and learning sign language at Friendly Hills Elementary. La Contenta Junior High School student, Gilbert Pinela said “When we study specific topics in our classes it makes me understand it more.” For further information about the GATE program offered at your school, contact the GATE Liaison.
