MORONGO UNIFIED SCHOOL BOARD TALKS INTERNET CONNECTIVITY, 1,000 LAPTOPS EXPECTED TODAY

During last night’s regular meeting of the Morongo Unified School District Board of Trustees, Assistant Superintendent Sharon Florez announced some relief to the school district’s electronic device shortage. An order of 1,000 laptops will be delivered to the school district today, August 26, and distributed to students as soon as possible. The MUSD Board of Trustees also received a presentation from Director of I.T. Troy Slayden on the school district’s proposed project to construct internet towers at school sites, which will provide signal to students up to 10 miles away. The school district is seeking a partnership with an internet provider to make the proposed project successful. The board then continued presentations on student achievement plans; this week from the principals and other representatives from Landers, Twentynine Palms, Oasis, Onaga, and Morongo Valley Elementary Schools. The plans for all sites have also been modified from previous years to use the district’s new distance learning and independent study programs to help students reach education goals for subjects including English language arts, mathematics, health and wellness, and reduced truancy and suspension rates.

Assistant Superintendent Amy Woods announced that lesson plans for all grade levels are posted on the MUSD website and are available at the front offices of each school site in the event of technological difficulties related to the distance learning program.

Assistant Superintendent Mike Ghelber welcomed the 30 new teachers that the district has hired for the new school year. The board also ratified the list of 2020 district high school graduates; approved increased district spending on architectural fees for the Yucca Valley Sewer Project from $38,000 to $114,000; and wished good luck and “technical grit” to all MUSD students, staff, and faculty for the first day of the 2020-2021 school year.
