Drugs and cell phones are among the topics on the agenda at tonight’s meeting of the Morongo Unified School District Board of Education. Reporter David Haldane explains…
Thirty-two years ago, a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent named Enrique Camarena was tortured to death by a drug lord in Mexico. Tonight, the Morongo Unified School District Board of Education considers honoring him in a traditional way; by declaring October 23 through 31 Red Ribbon Week, during which students will be urged to wear red ribbons promoting a drug free society. That’s just one of several routine items on the agenda for tonight’s board meeting. Others include student achievement plans for Twentynine Palms High School, Yucca Valley High School and Joshua Tree Elementary School, as well as an update of the district’s search and seizure policy to include cell phones and other recently minted electronic communication devices. Tonight’s meeting gets underway at 7 p.m. at Onaga Elementary School on Yucca Valley’s Onaga Trail.
