After meeting last night (March 8) in joint session with Copper Mountain College, the Morongo Unified School District Board of Trustees met in regular session at Joshua Tree Elementary School.

During open session, COVID-19 Response Coordinator Richard Romo explained that the universal masking requirement for K-12 and child care settings would end on March 11. As a result, starting March 12, all students, staff, parents, and volunteers in the district will no longer be required to wear masks, though masks are still strongly recommended. Contact tracing and reporting of positive cases will still continue, as will isolation and quarantine requirements for positive cases.

Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services Amy Woods presented more information regarding 2021-2022 Local Control and Accountability Plan, or LCAP, surveys. Woods asked the trustees to rank a list of eighteen priorities in order of importance, looking ahead to the final LCAP meeting on June 30.

Later in the meeting, Director of Elementary Curriculum Dr. Daniele Snider presented awards in recognition of school sites in the district for achievements in implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, or PBIS. Morongo Valley Elementary, Palm Vista Elementary, Twentynine Palms Junior High, and Yucca Valley Elementary Schools were honored for receiving gold status, meaning that they comprehensively and effectively implemented two out of three tiers of PBIS support while showing an increase in academic achievement in one area. Joshua Tree and Landers Elementary Schools were honored with platinum status for implementing all three tiers of support successfully and demonstrating growth in academic achievement in two areas.

The board then voted unanimously to certify that the district can meet its financial obligations for the current fiscal year and subsequent two fiscal years. They also unanimously approved the $1,174,000 bid to Valley Pipeline, Inc. for sewer improvements at Yucca Valley High School, as well as the $424,860 bid for re-reroofing at Friendly Hills Elementary School.
