MORONGO BASIN SEARCH AND RESCUE SEEKING VOLUNTEERS

When Twentynine Palms resident Erin Corwin went missing in 2014, volunteers with the Morongo Basin Search and Rescue team spent more than 5,000 hours searching 300 square miles of desert for her body. The volunteer group associated with the Sheriff’s Department is looking for residents who are interested in being a part of the team. Managing editor Tami Roleff has information about how you can join the search and rescue volunteers…
Formed in 1957, the Morongo Basin Search and Rescue team is a volunteer group with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department that has the responsibility of covering 5,200 square miles including the Morongo Basin. Members of the SAR team receive in-depth training and develop extensive skills in desert survival, tracking, land navigation, first aid and CPR. All members are certified and meet requirements established at the national level. The volunteers are equipped with personal survival gear necessary to accomplish these SAR missions. Anyone interested in joining the SAR team is invited to attend the general meeting at 7:00 p.m. on the second Thursday of every month on the first floor of the County building at 63665 Twentynine Palms Highway, between the county courthouse and the Morongo CHP office.
