Many Morongo Basin residents have reported receiving a phone call from someone claiming that their Social Security number will be suspended. Managing editor Tami Roleff also received a phone call, and urges residents not to fall for the scam…
Like many people, I don’t answer phone calls from numbers I don’t recognize. On Wednesday, I received five phone calls from a number listed only as Toll Free. When I listened to the message later, my suspicions that it was a scam phone call were confirmed.
“We just suspended your social security number because we found some suspicious activity.”
This is a scam. Social Security numbers are never suspended. If you get a call like this, hang up. Do not give the caller any personal identification—your social security number, your date of birth, your mother’s maiden name…. If you’ve received a phone call like this, do not return the call. Block the phone number if you can, and report it at one of the links below.
