It was all about dark skies at last night’s meeting of the Morongo Basin Mac. Reporter David Haldane says the designation is being sought for Joshua Tree National Park…
Score one for the twinkling stars. They were the winners last night as the Morongo Basin Municipal Advisory Council voted in favor of protecting the gorgeous night vistas of Joshua Tree National Park.
Specifically, the council wants the place to be designated as a “dark Sky Park” by the International Dark Sky Association, a global organization dedicated to promoting and preserving the world’s most beautiful night skies.
Joshua Tree should be included, according to the unanimously passed resolution, because it “stands as a dark sky oasis where millions of visitors can still gaze up in wonder at the Milky Way and celestial heavens.”
In short, the resolution continues, the park’s night skies constitute a “critically important resource that merits protection” due to its contribution to the “quality of life and the economic well-being of the region.”
