Apparently hijacked by area environmentalists, the Morongo Basin Municipal Advisory Council used their time that should go to local matters to comment and vote on a project way out of their jurisdiction. Reporter David Haldane was at last night’s meeting and files this report…
The Morongo Basin Municipal Advisory Council must be feeling its oats! Exceeded its usual geographic reach by more than a hundred miles, the Council voted unanimously last night to endorse a letter opposing a proposed solar power plant near Baker, California.
The Soda Mountain Solar Project—planned along the I-5 corridor—could power 170,000 homes. According to a letter by the Morongo Basin Conservation Association, however, it would also have “significant and unavoidable impacts that would compromise the quality of the environment.”
The letter, signed by MAC member Pat Flanagan, urges county Supervisor James Ramos to vote against approving the project’s final environmental impact report and ground water well permits.
The supervisors meet today to consider both. If approved, the letter says, the project would have “substantial adverse impacts on human beings.”
